Having worked on garage doors for so long, we are very aware of some common problems homeowners frequently deal with. That is why we wrote this blog on 3 of the most common issues with garage doors and their solutions.
Garage Door Not Opening/Closing All The Way
Is your garage door not opening and closing, or is it not opening/closing fully? One of the most common problems with automatic garage doors is when they do not respond correctly to their remote. There are a few common problems we can troubleshoot to why your garage door is malfunctioning. The first thing to check is the garage door photo-eye. Make sure nothing is in its path and that it is clear. If the photo-eye senses something in its path, it will likely prevent the door from moving. This is almost always the case if your door begins to move, stops, and then reverses direction. Another common issue is that the logic board is faulty and needs to be replaced. If your door is not traveling the full way, check your opener’s limit adjustment screws. Manually moving your adjustment screws with a flathead screwdriver can override a faulty opener.
Garage Door Squeaking
If your garage door is loud when it opens and closes this is most likely an issue with the door’s internal mechanics. If components are worn down or rusted, they will need to be replaced with new parts. The first step in fixing a squeaking door is to inspect the door. Take a look at the hinges, door tracks, wheels, and opening mechanism to see if you will need new parts. If you do not need new parts, clean and then lubricate the metal parts to remove rust or corroded metal. The best lubricant is garage door grease that is designed for garage doors. This grease should be applied to the door tracks, hinges, wheels, and all moving parts. Once lubricated, cycle the door open and close a few times to tell if the problem has been fixed.
Garage Door Hanging Crooked
Even your garage door is hanging unevenly there are a few ways to solve the problem. First, open the garage door halfway and prop the door open with a small step ladder to take weight off of the springs. Check the springs and move them up or down a hole to even out the door. Inspect the door to make sure it closes and opens evenly. To make fine adjustments, tighten or loosen the lift cable when the door is propped open.
