High-quality, well-installed windows can last upwards of twenty years. However, they will eventually need to be replaced, and when that time comes, the number of options presented to you can be overwhelming. Check out these tips to see which style is best for you and your home.
Double-Hung
This style of window has two separate sections that can open up or down independently. This is one of the most common styles of windows and there are useful in any room where you expect to be opening and closing your windows frequently. If you have any children, there are safer options, as double-hung windows are easy for a child who is leaning in a window to accidentally pull down on themselves.
Casement
This style of window comes in one section that opens outward with a crank handle. Another common style of window, Casements can be used in a variety of rooms just like double-hung windows. However, if you know you will have children using the windows, casements are the safest option. These windows open and close slowly and have to be cranked manually to operate.
Bay/Bow
If you want to allow a lot of light into a room, there’s no better option than a Bay or Bow window. Both are wide-style windows that can be put into a living room and fitted with a sitting area to create a reading nook or lounge spot. A great aesthetic piece that can bring a living space together.
Fixed
A fixed window is just as it sounds: a glass window that cannot be opened. This is a great option for a room that you want to let light into but have no need to ventilate. These windows are wonderful for energy savings as they are more secure than any other style of window, but they are best left to rooms that you know you will not have a desire to ventilate.
Sliders
Perhaps the only option that is easier to open and close than a double-hung window, a slider window opens left to right and are arguably the best option in a room where you will frequently be using the windows. These windows are very convenient but best left to rooms where children will not be using the windows as sliders are the easiest to fall out.
While there are many more niche window options, these are a few of the most popular styles in residential homes. If you’re looking for new windows, be sure to contact Merrimack Valley Glass & Mirror as we are proud to offer new windows for residential properties.
