The History Of Bad Luck Mirror Superstitions
There is a long list of activities that can bring you good or bad luck. From black cats to walking under ladders, the superstitious among you might be afraid of ever seeing a cracked or a broken mirror. The broken mirror superstition dates back to Roman times. If you are wondering why the superstition is for 7 years, it is because in Roman times there was a belief that every 7 years life would renew itself. Basically, Romans believed that it took 7 years for any misfortune to be reversed. So the phrase “7 years bad luck” translates more to you will be cursed until your body naturally heals from the curse in 7 years. But why does breaking a mirror bring on a curse?
Ancient Beliefs About Mirrors
For a long period of time, ancient people saw reflections as reflections of the soul. In fact, the silver backing in many mirrors in the middle-ages is what led to the lore that vampires would not be able to see themselves in a mirror. Silver was considered a holy metal, and vampire’s souls were so unholy there would be no way a vampire could see their own reflection. Regardless, the relation between reflections and the soul led to the idea that seeing yourself in a broken mirror would bring a curse. The idea was simply that seeing your broken reflection meant you caused your soul to break and therefore become cursed. To break the curse you would need to wait 7 years for the curse to naturally break or you could bury the mirror shards. However, nowadays if you break a mirror, you can just call a mirror company to replace it.
