Window and door screens are important in protecting your home. They can prevent insects and pests from getting inside your house, as well as decrease harmful UV rays from entering the home. As mesh screens get older they may show signs of tearing or other damage. In some situations, it is completely viable to simply repair your existing window or door screen, but if there is significant damage you will likely need to have your screens replaced.
Why Are Window Screens Important?
During the summer you will likely want to keep your windows open to help with air circulation. However, you do not want insects like flies, bees, or termites to get inside your home. That is where a window screen comes in. Window and door screens can allow for air to circulate without allowing pests easy entry into your home. Additionally, the mesh can decrease how much sunlight enters your home. This can prevent sun-bleaching, the process where direct sunlight causes damage to furniture and walls.
What Causes Window Screen Damage?
- Old Age: If you don’t remember when you first installed your window screens or it feels like it was years ago, it probably was. Generally, people recommend that screens are replaced every decade.
- Tears In The Fabric: One of the most common reasons to have your wire screens repaired or replaced is tears. There are a lot of things that can cause tears. Whether the mesh gets caught on something, is ripped by pests, or your pet cat destroys it, tears can quickly cause problems.
- Fading/Discoloration: If your mesh starts to fade or appears to be shiny, you may need to get it replaced. Beyond repelling bugs and other pests, the mesh is supposed to block out a certain amount of sunlight. If you feel like your mesh is no longer blocking out light you might need it replaced.
- Increased AC Bills: During the summer months you are likely using an AC or a fan to help keep you call. Your window screen can help decrease your overall utility bill by decreasing how much heat gets inside your home. If you notice your home is getting warmer, you may want to consider changing out your mesh.
