One common issue that many people have is with their automatic door opening or closing. Why Is My Garage Door So Slow?
The most common problem that causes a door to go slowly is lubrication. Increased friction between garage door components can lead to the door slowing down, stopping, or shuddering as it opens and closes. Additionally, over time, your springs and cables can loosen which can also decrease your door speed. One of the first things you should try is to use some lubrication. Many garage door repair companies recommend using a nono-silicone lubricant. You will want to apply the lubricant to the hinges, rollers, and springs. Be careful when applying lubricant especially to the springs. You do not want to apply any lubricant to the bearings or the tracks of your door. Cleaning them may decrease friction but lubricant is not recommended. Once you have lubricated your door, try testing it to see if it opens smoothly.
Why Does The Emergency Sensor Not Work On My Garage Door?
A federal mandate in the 90s required that all automatic garage doors have a sensor. This sensor is usually a small light at the base of the door that sends infrared across the door gap to a light sensor. If anything blocks this infrared beam it will stop the garage door from closing. This is to prevent potential injury. Some kids might have wanted to play Indiana Jones when they were young and dive under the slowly closing door, but this sensor stops that. Of course, a faulty sensor may make it impossible to close your door at all. If your door is stopping or reversing frequently, you should clean the lens of the infrared light. Sometimes dirt or grime can block the light which stops the sensor from transmitting. After cleaning it off you can test your garage door. If it is still not working there may be an alignment issue.
